One of the first questions our students ask when applying to study abroad is exactly the one in the title. Some institutions are exclusive and require only IELTS or only TOEFL, and often a certain score is also required, while a large number of universities and institutions accept both exams.

TOEFL or IELTS — the question remains! Although it may seem unusual, the answer is actually very simple — the better one is the one that suits you better.

What they have in common is that you cannot fail the test.
Based on the number of points achieved, results are interpreted and your level of English proficiency is determined.

Taking the tests

TOEFL and IELTS tests assess four language skills and consist of Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The testing formats differ. The TOEFL test is taken on a computer in a test center or at home, in one sitting. It lasts approximately 4 hours, with a 10-minute break. The IELTS test can be taken on paper or on a computer. IELTS currently cannot be taken from home. It lasts slightly less than 3 hours, but is sometimes taken in two parts. The Speaking section of the IELTS test is taken on the same day or a few days before, in a conversation with a native speaker, while during the TOEFL Speaking section you speak to — a computer. In Croatia, both tests can be taken in Split and Zagreb.

Scoring

The tests are scored differently, and the validity of results for both tests is two years. On the TOEFL test, you can score up to 30 points in each section, for a total of 120 points. Each section of the IELTS test is scored on a scale from 0 to 9, and the overall result is presented in the same way. The “conversion” of TOEFL scores into IELTS scores is shown in the following scale.

Specific test-taking techniques

To achieve the desired results, it is not enough to simply understand and communicate in English. It is necessary to master specific test-taking techniques. TOEFL and IELTS are standardized tests, which means that with proper guidance and practice, you can learn and adopt these techniques and achieve a strong result regardless of your choice. Some of these skills include specialized listening and reading techniques, recognizing key information, as well as effective note-taking strategies in the Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections.

Preparation for TOEFL and IELTS in our knowledge boot camp also includes mastering these specific test-taking techniques. Books, manuals, study materials, and multimedia resources are free for all our participants, as well as entry and exit tests. Preparation courses for IELTS and TOEFL have the same duration and number of hours, with differences only in the textbooks and materials used, as they are tailored to each specific exam.

Both tests are comprehensive and thorough. When choosing, first check the requirements of the university abroad that you want to apply to. Then approach the choice practically and base it on your own skills and abilities.
Some of the following statements may help you decide:

TOEFL test

  • I feel comfortable working on a computer.
  • I am okay speaking into a microphone.
  • I type quickly on a computer.
  • I use authentic English sources (that I read, listen to, and watch) primarily for information.

If you identify with most of these statements, TOEFL might be the right choice for you.

IELTS test

If you identify with the following statements, consider the IELTS test:

  • I am comfortable with detailed face-to-face interviews.
  • I have neat handwriting.
  • I don’t mind discussing non-academic topics in English.
  • I use authentic English sources (that I read, listen to, and watch) primarily for entertainment.

If you still cannot decide, contact us and we will help you choose, or take our study abroad quiz.

The cost of taking the TOEFL and IELTS tests is also similar. However, due to the high price, around 1500 HRK for TOEFL and 1610 HRK for IELTS, we recommend proper preparation to ensure a good result on your first attempt.

While the IELTS test is organized once a month, TOEFL can be taken more frequently. It is best to check the test dates for TOEFL and IELTS and register early. It would be a shame to miss the application deadline for your chosen university abroad due to fully booked test dates.
